El primer director de esta superproducción Había sido Anthony Mann que fue despedido por la estrella de la película, nada menos que Kirk Douglas a poco de empezar a filmar.

La revuelta de esclavos en la antigua Roma, mezclando las luchas intestinas en el senado y la fraternidad entre los esclavos eran los temas principales de esta monumental película de 1960 a 50 años de su realización.

Espartaco es Kirk Douglas que inspira a muchos como él a levantarse contra sus opresores, entre ellos el jóven Antonino que era interpretado por Tony curtis que es a su vez un favorito del emperador Marco Craso al que interpreta de una forma temible y malvada el impactante Laurence Olivier.

La famosa escena en que Tony Curtis "Antonino" baña a Laurence Olivier "Marco Craso" se cortó en 1960 porque algunos la consideraron una escena "gay". Cuando la película se restauró y se volvió a dar en los cines se incluyó la escena sacada y Anthony Hopkins dobló a Laurence Olivier que había fallecido.

Tremendas secuencias de masa y combate, con escenas memorables hizo de "Espartaco" un clásico inolvidable.

Conmovedora película épica que logra tener momentos muy emotivos como la pelea entre Espartaco y Antonino, obligados a enfrentarse para ver quien moría en la cruz. O la escena del final cuando la esposa de Espartaco "Varinia" interpretada por la dulce Jean Simmons, recientemente desaparecida, sostiene a su hijo en alto para que su padre Espartaco lo vea mientras está agonizando en la cruz junto a los hombres que lo siguieron. La imágen del camino con todos los cruxificados es realmente demoledora, muy pocas veces vista en el cine.

El elenco era notable: Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis, Charles Laughton, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov que ganó un oscar de reparto por esta película, John Gavin, John Ireland, Herbert Lom, John Dall, entre otros.

Duraba casi tres horas y media con un intervalo y era un espectáculo imponente.
El único del elenco que vive es Kirk Douglas con 96 años.

Douglas siempre se quejó del esfuerzo físico, al hacer esta película, ya tenía 44 años.

Un dato curioso, la musica de "Espartaco" fue usada por Martín Karadagian para sus "Titanes en el ring".

Si hoy tuviera que hacer la crítica no lo dudaría un solo instante: 5 Páginas excelente.
